Self-care is not just manicures and massages

Writer: Julie RoyJulie Roy

The term self care is everywhere.

It’s hard to discern exactly what it should include. It can be individualized for each person and can vary depending on circumstances.

For ex. there can be the minimum self-care such as proper sleep, varied diet, some exercise, perhaps time alone.

Some may desire more spiritual time, time with others.

And when we have been down physically and emotionally we probably need to increase some aspects of self-care.

Busy parents and caregivers, etc. may have to adjust the time allotted to certain segments of the wheel, but it is critical that some of these elements are prioritized or we feel burnout.

Some segments may also shift when you are dealing with a personal or professional crisis, but it is imperative that they shift back at times.

A good tool to start with is below.

  • Look over the categories recommended and then consider what would be your ideal for each category.

  • Then consider where you need extra support daily.

  • Finally, where should you increase when going through extra physical and emotional stress?
