I'm not bendy enough!

Writer: Julie RoyJulie Roy

To most Westerners, yoga is a physical asana practice. Many believe that I can never practice yoga, I am not fit enough, flexible enough. Yoga asana practice is highly adaptable and yoga is also an 8 limbed path, and understanding that path can provide us with resources to support our minds, and our bodies.

Yamas: include nonviolence, truthfulness, nonstealing, moderation, nonhoarding

Niyamas: purity, contentment, zeal, austerity,

Asana: postures

Pranayama: mindful breathing

Pratyahara: turning inward

Dharana: concentration

Dhyana: timeless awareness

Samadhi: selfless and timeless awareness

Additionally, there are further teachings on aspects of spiritual practice, aims of life, and afflictions. In many Western yoga settings, the teachings are often focused solely on asana and possibly pranayama practice.

By including the study of the principles while practicing the physical asanas, our mental health can benefit in addition to our physical health.
