Social work is political-the election 2024

Writer's picture: Julie RoyJulie Roy

I sought training as a social worker because I have always been an advocate at heart. I will advocate for the rights of everyone utilizing my code of ethics to ensure that I protect your right to self determination for the greater good of society.

This week, there is so much at stake for the United States of America. I respect everyone’s right to choose their beliefs but I can not support rhetoric that is demeaning, demoralizing or threatening.

Many clients are already telling me they feel afraid watching the display of violence and language against others lately.

I have to admit that I feel helpless to protect you,  but I will do all I can to help you strengthen your sense of self, your deserving of being respected and protected. It feels like too little but I will try to transmute that strength and power to you with the best of my ability.

Because you are deserving exactly as you are. And I hope with all my heart that a great power can protect you from anything that tries to demoralize and demean you for who you are, possibly for who you love or know.

These are trying times. I will not deny it.

Please, take care of yourself in the coming weeks.

Surround yourself with people who know, love, and encourage you for being exactly who you are. Find safe and encouraging spaces to feel all the feelings. Spend time with nature, animals, fun stories- books, podcats, shows. Music, good food. Please discern carefully the media you expose yourself to. Use your right to vote, safely. Then possibly turn to these resources to quiet your mind and strengthen your resolve to stand up for yourself or those that might be feeling threatened.

Some of my favorite soothing resources:
