Window /wheel of tolerance

Experiencing stress and trauma can overwhelm our ability to cope. It's important to understand when we can no longer manage stress by the following signs:

Hyperarousal:

  • Angry

  • Anxious

  • Tense

  • Panicked

  • Hypervigilant

  • Unfocused

  • Over-active

  • Impulsive

  • Overwhelmed

Some solutions can include grounding-such as using the 5 senses, or movement like going for a walk or run.

Hypoarousal

  • Tired

  • Numb

  • Flat

  • Lethargic

  • Passive

  • Foggy

  • Depressed

  • Disconnected

  • Hopelessness

solutions for this state can include keeping routines with movement breaks, or energetic music to prevent feelings of burnout.

Knowing your triggers is perhaps the most important starting point. What are the times of day when you notice a big change in your wellbeing? Are there certain activities you dread? Who are the people that bring you down or stress you out?

Keeping routines, knowing your best pace, and prioritizing your own needs is critical.
